Cruise Ship Casino Interior Art
Project Management, Technical Design, Lighting Design
Challenge:
Zsiba Smolover Studios primary media is glass, but were contracted by Royal Caribbean Lines to design artworks for the shipboard casinos. The Voyager of the Seas was the second ship they designed and I was hired to manage the project and bring additional technological capabilities to enhance the quality of the installation. Cruise ships are a very demanding environment for this type of work, with strict electrical, structural and safety standards. In addition, the entire project needed to be assembled, tested, then crated and shipped to Finland for the final installation.
Response:
The designers originally worked in theatrical set design, so we shared a common vocabulary and high standards for visual and technical quality. For the lighting, I employed considerable numbers of LED's (not a common practice at the time) installed on bespoke fixtures with custom engineered circuit boards. From my experience working on theme park projects I adapted digital show control technology to coordinate the lighting effects with the music that was commissioned for the environment. Furthermore, I designed many of the structural elements and sourced unique suppliers for processes such as casting the sculptural figures and applying a metal coating.
